Answer it out loud first — like you would in the room. Then check yourself:

WEAK: Either coy — "I'd rather not get into that" — or scattered: "a few banks, some consulting firms, a couple of startups; I'm casting a wide net." Coyness reads as game-playing; the wide net tells them you have no conviction about banking, which contradicts your whole pitch. GOOD: An honest, consistent answer within banking — "I'm in processes with several banks at similar stages" — with no gloating and no fabrication. GREAT: Honesty framed by a coherent story: "I'm focused specifically on IB and in processes with a handful of banks. You're my first choice because [specific, verifiable reason]" — claimed only if it is actually true, because bankers compare notes across firms and a leaked contradiction burns you. If you hold an offer with a deadline, share the date plainly — it's information they genuinely need to move for you. And the hard rule: never invent an offer; banking is a small industry, bankers compare notes, and bluffs get checked. The moves: coherence with your stated goals, a re-anchor to this seat, transparency on real timelines, zero games. Build yours: draft this story in the Story Bank (/stories).
