You're at full capacity and an MD walks over and asks you to take on something new directly. How do you respond?
Answer it out loud first — like you would in the room. Then check yourself:

What they're testing: whether you protect quality with communication, or fail silently — the two wrong answers are a flat 'no' to an MD and a silent 'yes' that sinks three deliverables. The move: enthusiasm plus transparency plus a route to arbitration. 'Happy to take that on — so you have the full picture, I'm on [X] for [VP] due tomorrow morning. If yours takes priority I'll loop in [staffer/VP] so nothing slips, or I can turn yours by Thursday.' You've said yes, surfaced the conflict, given a realistic ETA, and let seniors — who can actually see relative priority — make the call. That's exactly the arbitration structure staffers exist for. Trap in story form: any version where you quietly absorbed everything and something slipped, or where you triaged between MDs yourself and guessed wrong.
